Before choosing a Doula it's important that you speak with them to explore whether or not you're a good fit first. Your Doula will be joining you on one of the most exciting, vulnerable, intimate journeys of your life so choosing the right person for you (and your partner – if you have one) is incredibly important.
Doula's tend to offer a free session or 'interview' where you can get to know each other a bit better and ask any questions you may have. If you're wondering where to start, here are some things you may want to ask them before you make any decisions:
What do you offer as a Doula?
Have you done any formal training to be a Doula, if so, with whom?
How long have you been a Doula?
What experience do you have in supporting people through pregnancy or in the postnatal period?
Do you work with a backup Doula? If so, how does this work?
And most importantly get to know them! Sometimes these interviews are spent talking about the details of the support they offer, sometimes it’s more about getting a feel for the person.
Ask yourself these questions:
Do I feel comfortable with them?
Do I feel they listen to me?
Could I spend long periods of time with this person?
Does my partner like them?
What do my instincts tell me?
Is there someone I think would be better suited to my needs and wishes?
It is always a good idea to speak with multiple Doulas in order to make the best, most informed decision about who you want supporting your birth and/or postnatal period. You don't have to go with the first person you speak with, in fact, we encourage you to speak with others. As Doulas we want the best for you - whether that is having us accompany you on your journey or someone else. What matters is that you feel you are getting the best support possible.
